Delegation of Cao Bang province attended the 204th meeting of UNESCO executive board

Upon the implementation of the Letter No 11 dated February 2018 of National Commission for UNESCO and the invitation letter of the Permanent delegation of Viet Nam to UNESCO on participation at the 204th meeting of UNESCO executive board from April 8th to April 19th in France, on April 6th 2018 People’s committee of Cao Bang province issued a Decision to send a delegation of the province led by Mr. Hoang Xuan Anh, Deputy Secretary of provincial Party committee, Chairman of People’s committee of Cao Bang province, Chairman of the provincial Steering committee for the development of global geopark attending the 204th meeting.

In the morning of April 10th 2018, the delegation of Cao Bang cooperated with National commission for UNESCO and the Permanent delegation of Vietnam to UNESCO to attend the meeting.

On the sidelines of the meeting, on April 11th 2018 the delegation of Cao Bang led by Mr.Hoang Xuan Anh, Chairman of Cao Bang People’s committee met with Dr.Pr. Nguyen Duc Khuong – Chairman of AVSE – Association of Vietnamese Scientists and Experts (AVSE global). At the meeting, Mr. Hoang Xuan Anh invited the AVSE global coming to Cao Bang to conduct survey and provide consultancy on sustainable tourism development, border economics, and high-tech agriculture (the AVSE global accpeted the invitation and would send a delegation to Cao Bang at the end of August 2018)  

On April 11 2018, on the sidelines of the meeting, the delegation of Cao Bang met and discussed with the Vietnam’s tourism ambassador in France, Mrs Anoa Dassol on the promotion of Cao Bang images and Non nuoc Cao Bang, and invited her to visit and surveyed the tourism potential in the coming time.

In addition, the Delegation met with Permanent Delegation. H. E. Mr Yang Shen Ambassador and suggested to support for the UNESCO global geopark lable of Cao Bang. It was expected that in the future Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark and Geoparks of China, especially geoparks in the border areas of Cao Bang would have more exchange and sharing opportunities in the development of UNESCO global geopark model. 

In the same day, the delegation had a meeting the Prof.Patrick Mc Keever, Chief of Section, members of  the Earth Sciences and Geo-hazards Risk Reduction. Mr Hoang Xuan Anh expressed his thanks to Prof.Patrick Mc Keever and members of the Section for their support to the development of Non nuoc Cao Bang in the last time, and committed that Cao Bang would try its best to meet criteria of UNESCO, especially the 6 recommendations of UNESCO. Specifically, till now the province has developed solutions to upgrade infrastructure in the geopark, plan to protection heritage site against erosion and landslide; has carried out communication session and education to raise awareness in communities and schools; enhanced networking activities; issued the Instructive letter of the Chairman of People’s committee of Cao Bang province on strengthening the management and protection of geological, cultural, and landscape heritages in Cao Bang.

The Chairman Hoang Xuan Anh hoped the Earth Sciences and Geo-hazards Risk Reduction section would continue to support Cao Bang in areas such as: the planning and mangement of Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark, the promotion of Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark to the world, the networking enhancement, the technical and budget support to the utilization and protection of heritage sites of the geopark. On this occasion, Mr. Hoang Xuan Anh invited Mr. Patrick Mc Keever and member of Earth Sciences and Geo-hazards Risk Reduction section to Cao Bang to participate  at the International Conference on geopark which is scheduled to be hosted in Cao Bang at the end of October and beginning of November 2018.

Prof Patrick Mc Keever was very happy with the strong commitment of Cao Bang province to the development of geopark model in Cao Bang; thanked Viet Nam in general and Cao Bang in particular for the support and active participation in the global networking activities in the last time; commited to support the promotion of Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark, the networking activities with other global geoparks as well as the technical support for the utilization and protection of heritage sites in the Geopark area. He hoped to visit Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark soon, especially to participate at the International Conference in Cao Bang at the end of October and beginning of November 2018. He would try to provide technical and fund suppor to organize this Conference.

On the morning April 12 2018, the Deputy Minister of Ministry of Foreign affairs, member of the Party Central Committee cum Chairman of the National commission for UNESCO H.E. Le Hoai Trung and Chairman of People’s committee of Cao Bang province, and H.E. Tran Thi Hoang Mai met with the UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

On April 12th 2018 the Executive board of UNESCO at the 20th meeting session in Paris endorsed the UNESCO global geopark label to Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark. With this endorsement, Non nuoc Cao Bang becomes the second UNESCO global geopark after Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO global of Ha Giang province.

After the endorsement of the Executive board on the UNESCO global geopark to Cao Bang province, Mr Hoang Xuan Anh, Chairman of People’s committee of Cao Bang province had an TV interview with VTV, VNA, Nhandan, etc. at the headquarter of UNESCO, Paris, France on the objective of the development of Non nuoc Cao Bang geopark considering this as a model to promote and support the province to achieve socio-economic targets sustainably in addition to the preservation of ecological, cultural, biodiversity, awareness raising for local people and make them proud of the living homeland. 

The Chairman of Cao Bang province, Mr. Hoang Xuan Anh also confirmed commitment of authorities and people of Cao Bang province on the preservation and development of Non nuoc Cao Bang UNESCO global geopark in addition to the sustainable socio-economic development. Till now, the province has developed a specific action plan to utilize historical, cultural, bio-diversity heritages effectively. At the same time, the province would focus on the communication and education to raise awareness of local people in preservation, protection and promotion of these heritages.
